SASCOC TO MAKE ATHLETES PAY FOR RIO

After a dismal medal tally at the last Olympics in 2012, we saw President of sascoc/" title="Sascoc">Sascoc Gideon Sam stating that SASCOC money would be used to help athlete’s in their preparation for Rio de Janeiro.

According to City Press, ATHLETES will pay for their own airfare and be reimbursed by SASCOC at a later stage. SASCOC will reimburse a maximum of R12000 for all return Flight tickets to Rio de Janeiro. The cheapest SAA flight on departure to Rio de Janeiro on July 23 is R19000. According to another athlete ASA and SASCOC have no reaction to enquiries on coaches accompanying athletes to Rio de Janeiro and who would fit the bill. Flights and accommodation need to be booked and organised but no response from either organisation. “Competing overseas without coaches has become the norm and winning medals would be easier if approval was given long before”. The Training camp in South America would have been beneficial in preparation for athletes if not cancelled because ASA could not afford to pay.
