The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has explained the reason behind awarding the top goalscorer for the National First Division more money than the top goalscorer in the Absa Premiership.

Following the announcement of prize money for this year’s PSL Awards, set to take place on Monday, May 30, there were a lot of eyebrows raised as to why the top goalscorer in the second tier league will walk away with more money than the top goalscorer in SA’s top flight. The NFD’s top marksman will walk away with a staggering R50 000, with the PSL top goalscorer taking home R25 000.
Thabiso Kutumela, who helped Baroka FC to their first ever promotion to the elite league, banged in 18 goals for Bakgaga while Mpumalanga Black Aces’ Collins Mbesuma managed 14 league goals.
Speaking to the Siya crew, the PSL’s Media Manager Luxolo September was able to clear the air regarding the confusion.
“The NFD top goal scorer has scored 18 goals. It’s based on the number of goals that are scored, “ he said to the Siya crew.
Following his fine exploits in the 2015/16 season, Kutumela earned himself a dream move to Orlando Pirates after penning a contract with the Mayfair-based outfit in February and will be eager to continue where he left off when the 2016/17 season commences.
